Could this be Chironomus tentans?

Seen 25th May, in Cumbria, UK, close to a large lagoon, and the sea. Visually it looks very similar to Chironomus tentans, but is it possible to tell from images alone? I hope this is a male. There was another very similar fly there too, but it had much duller markings, and looked like a female. There has been one confirmed sighting at this nature reserve of this species, in 1992. Possibly Chironomus tentans. All the flies are female. |

Thanks very much John. So I had wrongly assumed that it looked like male claspers on the last photo. I guess these are too difficult to ID via images. Nigel. |
