Psychoda albipennis is indeed the best possible identification. An accurate ID is unfortunately impossible for this species group. Based on morphology, cytogenetics and DNA barcoding, there seems to be at least three species in the albipennis complex in Northern Europe alone. Regrettably we still do not understand the variation of the morphological or DNA characters sufficiently to make a robust species-level classification for these very common midges. |
