makes noise with the wings . . .

From today, 11.10.09:
Switzerland, near Lake Zurich, 412 müM, balcony
Size: about 12 mm ?

this one was bigger than the others and made noise with the wings, I heard this howerfly before sawing it.

Could you pleas help with the ID? - male

It's a Scaeva. They are indeed big and loud. The experts should be able to give it a species name. Im too lazy to look it up, but there are just 2 possible names really (selenitica or dignota).

Compared with the pics in gallery: is it selenitica ? (the dark hairs on the top of the head in front of the eyes?)

It is S. selenitica - compare the discussion here: http://diptera.in...;pid=49852. The yellow marks of S. dignota crossing the abdomen edge are well seen here: http://syrphidae....c/sd4.html.
