Hello
Captured in St-Germer-de-Fly (Dépt. Oise - France) - August 24, 2003 .
The insect has : 5 Flagellomeres - Antennae black - Eyes not hairy - Tibiae not entirely yellow - Scape 4 times as long as pedicel
Length without antennae : 10.1 mm
From 2001 to 2004, besides the one pictured here, I found 3 females (but not male) similar. Their lengths were mm: 11.2 - 11.8 -12.0 , which is unusually small for Females !
The 4 were caught in the same location (with a margin of 200 m.).
Boucek (A Biosystematics study ... Stratiomyidae - 1982) writes on p.243 :
"Length of Both Sexes: Body 11.0-17.0 mm"

Is this a dwarf form of Stratiomys singularior Female or another species?

Thanks

Without the actual specimen I cannot be certain, but it might be one of the longiocornis with distinct abdominal markings (which would not be unusual for Southern European specimens). The size would fall within the range of that species, too. However, if you state that the scape is only 4 times as long as the pedicel, then it should be a dwarfish singularior.

Hello,
Thanks for your answer.
I confirm the proportion between the lengths of Scape and Pedicel because I have measured with a Micrometer eyepiece
Thank you for your help.
PS : Is there an interest to put this singularior on gallery ?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
