Hello all,

Would it be possible to identify this female Syrphidae? (Genus, Species)?

Those pictures were taken in a marsh near home (Quebec, near Vermont).

Hello,

here in Europe this would be an Eristalis tenax female. The species is distributed worldwide, but I don't know if there are additional similar species in North America.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Photos of all Eristalis known from Ontario are here: http://www.canaco...stalis.htm
The photos have diagnostic features pointed out.

Thanks! I think the hairy bands on the eyes are distinctive enough to say it's E. tenax.

Interesting, that E. interrupta is listed as 'uncommon' for Ontario. Here it is one of the most numerous Eristalis, more abundant than arbustorum, which listed as 'common and widespread' for Ontario. But both species are nearly ubiquitous here and live in the same habitats.
Best regards,
Jürgen

Others (from others forums) pointed me toward E. tenax.

Cheers,

Michel

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
