I'm not fully sure this is a Syrphid, although it certainly is a hovering fly. Actually, I only saw it hovering, and never sitting! Quite annoyingly so, since taking good pictures of hovering flies is not too easy. This is the best I could do.

Medium sized, say about 8 mm. Robust build. Thorax looking greenish in flight. Quite common in Melbourne, though not numerous. Mostly seen in sunny patches under trees.

Most striking are the lined eyes - a feature I only saw on my photographs...Sad The other remarkable feauture is the hairy sides of the abdomen, which is not too sirphid-like at all...well, at least in my Eurocentric perception!
