Hi,
Can this syrphid be Scaeva selenitica? Shot on Adonis vernalis (Ranunculaceae) in the Spaeth-Arboretum, Berlin, on 22 April 2007.
Thanks for identification,
Sundew

Hello
no not Scaeva. I think it's Eupeodes luniger female, but I am not an expert.

You are right - Scaeva selenitica should be more hairy. I did not know that Eupeodes flies that early, but the description of E. luniger fits quite well, especially the yellow spots not continuing to the abdomen margin, and also the wing venation. If there is no further disagreement, I shall label the photos "Eupeodes luniger".
Thanks, Sundew

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
