Photographed in Bergen,Norway today. Is it possible to get an ID on this hoverfly? The thorax looks similar to Episyrphus balteatus, but the rest of the fly don´t look like any of the E. balteatus I ever seen before.... Truls Lerdahl Tlerdahl attached the following image: [274.61Kb] |

Hello, surely Episyrphus balteatus. Such coloured individuals can appear when it is too cold during development. Best regards, Jürgen -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Juergen Peters Borgholzhausen, Germany WWW: http://insektenfo... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= |

Thanks a lot for the answer, Jürgen. It has been colder here in Bergen than it has been for many, many years, so maby I find more of this dark E.balteatus. Best regards Truls |

It is a so-called intersex (frons width intermediate between male and female; no normally structured genitalia [eitehr male or female]), which usually are much darker than ordinary specimens.
