I got both sexes of an interesting Chamaepsila last june in Pyrenees at 1500 m. The species is belonging to the pallida group and keys out as C. pectoralis with the recent key by Shatalkin & Merz (2010) but is definitely not belonging to pectoralis. Any ideas?
I got some other Chamaepsila during the same trip. Chaemospila rozkosnyi should occure in this area but unfortunately I have no copy of the description (CARLES -TOLRA , M. 1992. Two new species of Psilidae and Tethinidae (Diptera) from Spain.). Can someone help me out please?
Regards
Piet

The only species in Shatalkin & Merz (2010) fitting the above image is unilineata. C. pectoralis keys out as having an entirely black mesonotum and the above specimen evidently has a partly yellow mesonotum.
Unfortunately, I do not have Carles Tolra's either, so I cannot check that one.

Thanks Paul for your hint. I was thinking about C. unilineata as well but my specimens correspond not with the diagnoses by Shatalking & Merz e.g. the black postpedicel or the black center of mesonotom. Meanwhile I compared the genitalia with C. pectoralis and a complete yellow C. unilineata from Sweden. All very close especially the long, slender aedeagus and parameres with small teeth but finally different. Possibly I need much more material and time.

Piet

Chamaepsila luteola from Britain is a similar species but it supposedly has relatively narrow peristoma compare to the other similar species. Unforyunately, male genitalia have not been described (according to Wang, 1988).

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
