Is it possible to ID this small beefly from Samos, Greece, which fed by hovering just above flowers and then dipping down, to genus at least. Based on images and this post, I'm guessing it could be a Petrorossia or Cononedys sp. http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=48698&pid=210912 28.7.12 c6mm Samos, Greece, north coast near Karlovasi. nick upton attached the following image: [89.51Kb] Nick Upton - naturalist and photographer |

I thought you liked a challenge.... and these guys never seemed to settle so flight shots were the only option..

I like, but this is not a challenge. The definitive character is not visible, it is in the wing venation. |

Seems like I needed a superfast shutter speed or high speed flash for a photo ID on this little one..... Did you see these other Samos beeflies, though (wing veins visible so they should be an easier challenge for a man of your talents.....): Amictus sp. pulchellus?? http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=49393 and what I think must be an Expoprosopa pandora http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=49392
