Hi,

this Chloropidae has very thick arista but the 3rd antennal segment is rounded. I can't find the family ... How does Melanochaeta look like ? June 26. 2011 Loviisa, Finland and malaise trap.

I can take more pictures if You like Sara. I ended to Melanochaeta with Collin as arista is flattened and pubescent. Very tick in fact. Then there are only three possibilies: Melanochaeta, Gampsocera and Elachiptera and Melanochaeta is the only one with rounded third antellal joint. What kind of angles You like to have ? This is interesting, because it would be new species to Finland if it really is Melanochaeta capreolus Smile

After some mails and pictures and keys I believe we have Malanochaeta opaca, Duda 1932 in this picture. If so, it will be a new species to our fauna again Smile Thank You Sara !

Now I must make a correction. We have a new Chloropidae-book and after careful examination master Kahis gave his judgement. Even the arista looks thick indeed, this species is in fact Incertella kerteszi, not Melanochaeta opaca. Good to have everhing correct Smile

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
