(...or am I totally wrong?) Hello to all! Is there any chance to give an exact name to this fly? And if yes, by what characteristic? 7 June 2009, England, Brighton Greetings Rupert Rupert Huber attached the following image: [81.19Kb] |

Hello Rupert E. lapponicus is easy to recognise when you see on a flat wing: Vein R4+5 is strongly bent. So I think it is not E. lapponicus. Regards Maja dipdip attached the following image: [98.06Kb] Edited by dipdip on 24-06-2009 21:55 |

Thank you for a great question and an excellent answer. (and not even a fauna I work with) Experts often answer questions too quickly: "What is this?" "Oh it is XYZ" Those of us at the hard part of the learning curve benefit greatly when some one can take the time to explain their answer so clearly. |

Thanks a big lot for this lesson, Maja, especially that perfect picture! I was always misinterpreting the wing drawing that I have, but now I know which vein is meant by R4+5, what will make identification of other flies (or syrphids at least) easier for me in many cases.
