This interesting specimen was feeding on Paliuris spina-christi in my Nature Reserve in Northern Greece (Wetland Kerkini).

Eristalinus aeneus, that is the name that was in the back of my mind, but I didn't remember the strange gap, inlet, in the wing venation. My thanks to you both anyway.
