Hello, Christine! Christine Devillers wrote: Several small (3 mm) black flies today on the wall. Male and female of Chironomidae ? Yes. There are hundreds of them here (northwest Germany) at the walls, too, since weeks. I would also be very pleased, if a more specific ID would be possible, but I'm afraid it isn't... I found this possibility on that post http://www.diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thread_id=11105 Tony Irwin wrote:
When a very small black chironomid is flying in the winter, it often turns out to be Smittia, but as Gabor suggests, it's not safe to say much more than "male chironomid". Edited by Christine Devillers on 26-03-2008 21:31 |

Hi Christine If you can catch a couple of males and post them to me (dry or in spirit), I may be able to put a name to them - it is largely down to finding a good match with the genitalia figures. Otherwise, it's best to just record this as "chironomid species". Tony ---------- Tony Irwin |

Thanks for the proposition, but I've looked on the wall and they have disappeared. |
