Hi,

Only managed a few mediocre photos of this fly, everything I can see looks consistent with Eriothrix rufomaculata, but is there enough in these 3 images for a firm ID?

I'm rewilding a small farm, so every species is an interesting data point, but only if if the ID is reliable!

Should be 3 photos in total.

Many thanks!

I'm sorry, but the images are to blurry for me. The fly looks like an Eriothrix, but that's all I can say.
Greetings, Eric

I think there is a very high probability you're right. They love ragwort - I've seen lots here in the south recently.

There are only 2 Eriothrix sp in the UK and E. prolixa is rare. From what I can find on iRecord and the NBN atlas, it is definitely a southern species: in the north only a couple of records in the Lake District area and nothing in Scotland. This is not the most recent data but can't be too far off. E. rufomaculata is recorded quite widely in Scotland, esp in the east.

When in doubt, apply Ockham's razor. It is a British invention, after all
