Found today, I think it's a drone, Vespula vulgaris. I took it into the house and feeded it with some honey, after that, I removed it back to the house wall. Data: Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, D-59821 Arnsberg, 235 m, 25.11.2024. Best regards Volkmar Volkmar attached the following image: ![]() [97.01Kb] Edited by Volkmar on 26-11-2024 13:09 |

Hello Eric, here is a picture of the complete antenna. I count 13 antennal segments, but I'm not so sure, so I think it's a male. Best regards, Volkmar Volkmar attached the following image: ![]() [96.84Kb] Edited by Volkmar on 26-11-2024 12:47 |

This morning I found it unfortunately absorbed by a harvest spider. Regards Volkmar Volkmar attached the following image: ![]() [66.94Kb] |

Poor man! Yes, it is a male and the parallel-sided humeral strip and the indented yellow patch in the eye points to V. vulgaris but the face looks more like V. germanica. And I have never seen a Vespula sp. with that long silvery hair! So I don't dare to give the species a name other than Vespula cf. vulgaris!

Hello Eric, after consulting an expert who regularly relocates wasp colonies, it is a fresh young male wasp, that loses it's silver hair over time or some of it turn black later. Best regards, Volkmar |
