Found in Río Bigal reserve ~800M, just under cloud forest in Ecuador. Found during the day

I'm not an expert in either family, but I wonder whether this might be one of the wasp-mimicking Tephritidae, rather than a syrphid?

Some Tephritoidea. I think I see the subcosta bent at a right angle as in Tephritidae.

In Kenya, Kakamega Forest, occurs a similar robust platystomatid which in addition has wings folded exactly as Vespidae. m.tschirnhaus@uni-bielefeld.de
