Hi,
On 1st July I saw this small black fly in a wetland area in southwestern Germany. I consider it a Hydrotaea (Muscidae). With the key of D'Assis Fonseca (1968) I found that there are just a few species with the combination "knob of halteres yellow" and "frontal triangle more or less dulled by dust, frontal orbits densely grey dusted throughout". The best decision should be H. albipuncta ("distinct blackish shine around front ocellus", middle tibia usually with a short anterodorsal on apical half" ). I feel very uncertain, however, and would therefore highly appreciate experts' opinion!
Thanks in advance, Sundew

In the upper picture there is the short ad on T1 visible, I think. And the head detail shows the dark shiny patch around the ocelli.

The subcostal vein reminds me a Fannia.

Ah - "SC more proximally diverges from R1 than in Muscidae"... Somehow I don't get it, probably because of a lack of comparison. And I did not expect a Fannia to be so small, but I actually only know F. canicularis. The Fannia key leaves me perplexed, so we'll better stay with "Fannia spec.". Many thanks, Jan!

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
