Nearly 5mm, Clitheroe UK, 25 October 2010. Today I caught my first male of the pallidiventris group, and I think the long prong makes it P. stylata. Under the microscope it certainly matches the diagram in Remm and the description in Shatalkin. The only thing that makes me doubt is that JariF's pinned specimen in the Gallery seems to have a similarly long prong but is labelled P. pallidiventris. Have I got something wrong? I understand why you think stylata. But, to be honest, it is better to look at the genitals under the microscope. But, again, my best guess is also stylata. Nice photo, BTW.

Well, indeed, Stephen, the genitalia are so typical. If you looked at the genitalia under the microscope...no doubt.

Thanks. I take it from your answers the some of the other species can look similar externally, but it's hard to imagine from the other diagrams how the 'stylus' could project so far. |

O, yes, without the genitalia, it is practically impossible to separate the three species.
