This is an Anopheles female (palps as long as the proboscis). As far as I can see, there are dark-scaled patches on some of the wing veins, so either An.atroparvus or An.messeae. These species are inseparable as adults, but atroparvus is more likely to come into a house, so I think that's the probable ID.

Tony,

Thanks for the helpful reply.

I attach a closeup showing the wing detail, which was not too clear in the original shots, so there can be no mistake.

I presume that these are common in England (unfortunately Frown ) though I see that there are not many represented in the Gallery, certainly neither of these two particular species. Would it be worthwhile uploading these as larger images?

Regards,

Basil

I'm happy that the species is one of the two I suggest, but the photos do not show the typical wing markings clearly, so they're not the best pics for the gallery. FrownBut as you say, there's no others, so (until you get some better images), these could be useful!

Hi Tony,

The image above is, for some reason, not quite as I uploaded it. It was (is) 800x634 but seems to have been reduced to 600x476 Shock and shows somewhat less detail as a result. Sad I will upload larger images to the Gallery and then hopefully you'll be able to judge them better Smile.

Basil

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
