Hello,

a 9 mm Tachinid on Heracleum sphondylium on a meadow next to a small creek this morning (northwest Germany). ID possible?

BTW: There were many Tachinidae on the wing today: Ectophasia crassipennis, 3 Phasia species (barbifrons, obesa, hemiptera), Tachina (cf.) fera, Peleteria rubescens, Eriothrix rufomaculata, Mintho rufiventris, Epicampocera succincta, Linnaemya sp., Soliera sp., Siphona sp. and maybe others. I shot nearly 600 photos today (not only of Tachinids of course... Cool). Some I'm planning to post here for ID or verification.

Hi Jürgen, it's a Dinera - mid-dorsal depression of syntergite 1+2 does not reach the posterior margin = ferina.
But: do you have a lateral shot, too? Reason: ferina should have 4 dc postsutural and I see only 3. To exclude carinifrons I'd like to see if the head's length is smaller than it's height.

Greetings, Eric

Well spotted ! Note the excavation into syntergite 1&2 is not complete, so this might actually be carinifrons / fuscana. Note the species has been split recently by Ziegler. (that is, it is split by Shima for eastern Palaearctic and then found also in Europe by Ziegler).

Thanks a lot Theo for the interesting information about carinifrons / fuscana. Where can I find a description of the differences - is fuscana brown anywhere?

Regards, Eric

I'm afraid, I don't. I always try to get as many angles as possible, but yesterday it was very windy (so hardly good pictures possible at all) and the fly was very busy.

The three following pics are the most "lateral" I have.

Hi Jürgen, on the last photo we can see:
- face strongly protruding
- 3 dc postsutural
- excavation into syntergite 1&2 not complete
So it's surely Dinera carinifrons / fuscana

Kind regards, Eric
