This Ephydrid was swept from Hedgecourt NR, south Surrey on 28.vi.2020 - a wet woodland/reedbed site. It keyed easily to Notiphila and then seemingly satisfactorily to N. umbrosa on the basis of the 3-4 facial setae, second antennal segment yellow, scutellum dusted grey underneath with black laterally, tibiae more yellow than black and very short wing length (<3.5mm) and black 5th tergite. Could it be possible to confirm/otherwise this specimen without a male? Thanks, James JamesM attached the following image: [79.93Kb] |

I'd be hesitant to ascribe this female to umbrosa - the abdominal markings appear to be better defined than I would expect of umbrosa, and it is well out of its range (as far as I am aware, it is a species currently known from East Anglia only). If you can return to the site, you should be able to find some males, and confirm the ID one way or another.

Thanks Tony, that's what I expected - I looked at the NBN Atlas and saw that the records were solely confined to East Anglia, making me much less confident of my original determination (along with the definition of the abdominal markings)! I will return to the site to try to find a male. James |
