Hi all:
This fly was collected on March 31st, 2019 in Shanghai, China. Is it a Calliphora vomitoria?
Thanks in advance!

I am uncertain exactly which species of Calliphora you have in China, but this one looks more like Calliphora vicina (the hair on the jowls is black, and the anterior spiracle is orange).

Thank you Tony!
C. vicina and C. vomitoria are listed as the two commonest species in the genus for Shanghai, so I think I will stick with C. vicina!

Hold tour horses ! The vertex is too broad for male vicina and the calypter is not darkened, so there is no way this is vicina (or vomitoria). It is very likely one of those eastern palaearctic species. I need to check the literature.

Thank you Zeegers for pointing it out!
I'll also research about this genus in our regionSmile
Meanwhile I'll hold back any species-level ID

It is the male of C. grahami for the reasons given.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
