Hello, I observed this morning this diptera on the body of a duck, I think of female of a Lucilia but I hesitate with a Lucilia ampullacea and Lucilia caesar ? Is it possible to identify it or I must stay at Lucilia sp ? Cordially maxime Edited by maxi6215 on 21-10-2018 17:41 |

Even with pin sharp macrophotographs it is hardly possible to identify females ofLucilia. The key by Steven Falk (https://quelestce...132016.pdf) tells us nicely what to see - and what your photos sadly don't show... If we were at least able to estimate the length of the 3rd antennal segment that is said to be 3-4 times as long as wide in L. ampullacea and about 2.5 times in L. caesar, but alas, no chance. So it might be the frequent L. caesar, but this is just a guess. Regards, Sundew |

Lucilia cf caesar is a fine guess and i will bet that it is correct. Lucilia sp. is a bit pretentious. I am confident that it is not Lucilia ampullacea. vide Blowflies of Fennoscandia and Denmark by Dr. Knut Rognes http://www.knut-rognes.no/ Best wishes, John John and Nini. Naturalists not experts. |
