Hi, On the 10th of March, 2017, I found this male sitting on the windowsill of our staircase. Utilizing the threads https://diptera.i...d_id=38795 and https://diptera.i...d_id=58433 as well as the keys by D'Assis Fonseca and Zimin & Elberg in Bei-Bienko I arrived at Helina pertusa. Did I interpret the decisive characters correctly? Many thanks for confirmation or correction; Muscidae is still a difficult field for me... Sundew Sundew attached the following image: [291.51Kb] |

Hello Sundew, I think that your determination is correct. Everything matches well with H. pertusa. I have both male and female specimens for consultation. The arista seem to be pubescent, which also matches H. pertusa. The row of dense hairs on the hind femur is diagnostic with this species. Helina can be quite variable, so mastering this genus is very difficult. I think that Muscidae are difficult for everyone but you do well with them. I don't know if you collect specimens but i'll attach a photo of mine which depicts the male genitalia of H. pertusa in dorsal and lateral view. maybe Nikita will confirm it for you if you wish to have the opinion specialist. I don't know when Stephane will return. Best wishes, John johnes81 attached the following image: [20.59Kb] Edited by johnes81 on 16-10-2018 09:29 John and Nini. Naturalists not experts. |

So let us assume that Nikita's silence means consent! The row of dense hairs on the hind femur is diagnostic with this species. This is true for the males only - their beard is on the hind leg (strange fashion!) Thanks for supplying a pic of the genitals and the comments. Best regards, Sundew |
