About 6 mm, numerous this week in a former garbage dump, Southern Limburg, NL.

Always waving their wings, when walking.

I'm tempted to suggest that this is a Stevenia (Rhinophoridae), but I'm not totally convinced. Frown It will be interesting to hear what one of the experts has to say.

Thanks Tony,

My first thought was Rhinophoridae too, until I came across Periscepsia carbonaria :

https://diptera.info/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=5&thread_id=66912

Problem is, that Periscepsia in Holland seems to be restricted to the coastal area, whereas the place where I found it is as far away from the coast you can get in the Netherlands, and moreover it isn't really sandy.

That certainly looks like a better match. I wouldn't worry too much about the location. In Britain it is primarily a coastal species, but it has been taken at inland sites as well.

Hi Ben,
Periscepsia carbonaria is indeed OK ,
Limburg is a weird locality. Was it a very sandy river bank or something similar ?

No Theo,

It wasn't sandy at all (anymore), allthough near the Brunssum Moor.
You can find some information here :

https://www.bodemzorglimburg.nl/voormalige_stortplaatsen/het_kreupelbusch

I saw quite a lot of them, all walking around on covers of wells (putdeksels).

Thanks for confirmation,

Ben

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
