I photographed these robber flies in a courtship display in Kruger National Park, South Africa in September. Kindly ID them for me, and if anyone has further info on courtship in robber flies I would appreciate it, as I have never seen this before. Thanks!

I know too little about Afrotropical Asilidae, so I can't give you the species name. It seems that they belong to the subfamily Brachyrhopalinae but I can't see enough, so it is just a guess. This kind of behaviour is also known from the genera Dioctria (Dioctriinae) and Holopogon (Brachyrhopalinae). You can find more here: https://sites.google.com/site/australianasilidae/introduction-2/biology/adults/courtship-and-mating

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
