This doesn't quite fit varius - more like the Nearctic dyari. Could this be pictipennis? (I have no reference for this species, which does occur in Sweden.)

The wing of Psectrotanypus pictipennis is mostly brown with pale spots, according to Roback, and the scutellum is dark orange-brown. I have not seen the species. |

Thanks for your input. So of the two Psectrotanypus in Sweden, varius more probable than pictipennis? No other genus, like Apsectrotanypus or simililar possible? |

This appears to me to be more like Psectrotanypus, but not varius - it does vary a bit, but not this much. If this is not pictipennis, then I would say it is likely to be dyari. Ideally you would capture a male, so that the genitalia characters can be checked. The wing pattern should be very similar in both sexes.

Thankyou Tony. Since dyari is not recorded in Sweden (found in Europe?), it aught to be pictipennis. |

Agreed, but it would be good to check...
