Female 2,1cm from southern Norway (Kristiansand) today. Some say the black spot on the side of the chest is a great ID for bromius. I have more photos to ad if necessary.

Those are proven wrong: clearly a sudeticus.

Thanx Theo! I was 99% sure it was a sudeticus, but I am a spesialist on arachnids and not diptera. I am afraid many sudeticus are misidentified as bromius by some people up here in Norway. Hopefully someone will clear that up in the near future. Again thanx for the quick reply!
All the best, -Roy-

well, there are many difficulties in Tabanidae, but this is not one of them.
bromius is 14 mm. with eyeband, sudeticus 22 +mm. without

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
