Hi * locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL * date - 2007.08.16 * size - 6 mm (medium fly) * habitat - open land * substrate - on Mentha sp. flowers. I spotted another spectacular conopid in Friday. This is not P. rufipes. Look at the wings and the frons. EDIT---> Title changed from "Another spectacular conopid!" to "Conopidae - Physocephala chrysorrhoea (smaller size)" then to "Conopidae - Physocephala variegata (smaller size)" and finally to "Conopidae - Conops flavifrons" jorgemotalmeida attached the following image: [187.95Kb] Edited by jorgemotalmeida on 14-09-2007 22:48 |

Theo, when you don?t know even the genus in conopid, it must be a very good sign. I have doubts too in this mystery conopid. I must dig more info for conopids. |

I think this is Psycocephala sp. It is very clear that cross vein at the basis of cell R connects to the underlying cell at two thirds of its length! I think this is definitive character to distinguish between Conops and Psycocephala! |

Yes, and again I vote for Physocephala chrysorrhoea! This because of the clearly visible silvery stripe! Greetings, Greetings, Gerard Pennards |

Yes, Gerard! So I have, for now, (it just lacks to see another thread of conopid) two specimens of P. chrysorrhoea. One bigger specimen (more than 10 mm) and other much smaller (about 6-7 mm --> this one!). Now I must choice the photos for the gallery. I will show, at least, the one that shows clearly the silvery stripe! And other with the wing venation. Any more suggestions? |

The one with clear wings, this one, is Ph. variegata. The one with darkened wings is Ph. chrysorhoea. According to Seguy, that is. Theo |

hmm... Is it P. chrysorhoea or P. chrysorrhoea? I think it is just a forgot pressing the "r" letter. According to Faunaeur it is P. chrysorrhoea . Ok. So I have a smaller one P. variegata (this one) and the other 2 P. chrysorrhoea. Perfect! Thanks, Theo and Gerard. |

Conops?? BUT the cross vein at the basis of cell R connects to the underlying cell at two thirds of its length, so it would be a Physocephala, no? Explain, please. Thank you! I'm very curious because I know that you are expert on conopids. (I saw your website and know some german. I saw your list of Conopidae: Archiconops ??? an ancient Conops?? Wow! Let me know more about this species! Is it palearctic? |
