This Chrysotoxum was observed on 19-05-17 on gardenland within a hedge of Acer campestre an Crataegus sp.
(Northern Germany, Lower Saxony). Can the species be determined?
best wishes, Jann

Female: unique among European Chrysotoxum in possessing a longitudinal, median, membranous strip on abdominal tergite 6, which effectively divides this tergite into two parts TumbsUp

I think that usually the patern of yellow markings on tergites is very distinctive ina case of Ch, cautum. The same as we can see on your picture. My English is not good enough to describe it, but I agree with your ID Smile

Tank you also, treebeard!
Do you think that the following two (photo taken on 07-07-16 in a village nearby) are also C. cautum?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
