Hello, is someone here able to identify the genus? I hope Stratiomyidae is correct. Length 30 mm. 2016-05-05, northern Germany, garden, small pond Lennart Bendixen attached the following image: [297.14Kb] Edited by Lennart Bendixen on 10-03-2019 17:45 |

I think this is the final instar of Oplodontha viridula for it seems as if there is a hairbrush at the ventral side of the head and the habitus and hairs on the body doesn't fit Odontomyia or Stratiomys.

I just came across a species account of O. viridula in an old field guide (1998) for flies, which says the length of the larvae would measure 14 to 17 mm - but mine was twice as long, 30 mm. Now what is to say about that? Just an outdated information or is this probably not O. viridula but some other stratiomyid? |

You're right. Size matters. 30 mm is o.k. for Odontomyia ornata |

Great, I've never seen an adult of O. ornata. Thanks! |
