Susan (Walter) commented on another image: "I think it would be possible to mix up V pellucens and Leucozona lucorum if you were a beginner."

I'm one of those beginners. L. lucorum is reported as being introduced into North America but V. pellucens has not - but things do change!

This fly appears to be L. lucorum; 13 July 2007, New Brunswick, Canada.

Volucella pellucens has a yellow face, so this is very likely to be L lucorum - a very faded one, as the hairs on the thorax are ginger in fresher specimens

Definitely not V. pellucens, also the shape of the face is very different.
Is the Arista plumose?

Thanks Nigel and Gunter. Hairs on dorsal thorax are clear, on lateral thorax yellow, and those on the scutellum are white. The specimen is densely hairy and looks in pristine condition with no wear. Fading is an option but I would have expected to see evidence of wear - we do get very bright days here and it gets hot (in summer!).
Dorsal arista not plumose but bare.

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
