Hello, I found this Ephydridae in my garden in the west of the Netherlands on 24 november 2014. Is Ephydridae OK and is further ID possible? Regards, Ramon Ramonv attached the following image: [77.17Kb] Edited by Ramonv on 11-04-2016 16:35 |

Fairly sure this is Paracoenia fumosa - quite a large species, with 5 pairs of dorsocentrals (though they're not clear in this photo), bristly mouth-edge and infuscated wings. Have you got any other shots?

Thank you Tony. Unfortunately, I could only take one picture before it flew away. And I haven't seen it in my garden since. Ramon |

Tadeusz Zatwarnicki has kindly pointed out an error in my identification - this is actually Teichomyza fusca. (Which explains my unease about it being Paracoenia! Teichomyza is one of those species I rarely see - it appears to be extinct in Britain, although still abundant on parts of mainland Europe.)
