Hi

* locality - Serra da Estrela - PORTUGAL
* date - 2007.05.06
* size - 6 mm (medium fly)
* habitat - cervunal - 1500 m - 1600 m altitud
* substrate - granite

Very unusual and spectacular to look at this tachinid beauty!

Look at the gena below the eye-- it has a small red spot (viewed in lateral view). Very huge calypters for a tachinid I think.

EDIT ---> Title changed from "Very unusual tachinid" to "Tachinidae - Baumhaueria cf. microps" and finally "Tachinidae - Baumhaueria microps"

Yes, that's the first impression. Gonia
However, the ocellar bristles are proclinate.....

This is Baumhaueria. The most common (or, let me rephrase, least rare) species is B..... goniaeformis (it nearly fooled Meigen as well !)
However, this one gives more the impression of another species, like B. microps ?? Baumhaueria is currently under revision, it would be very nice if this specimen has been collected.

I'm glad to inform that according Theo this is a female of Baumhaueria microps. The species is quite rare.
