Hello experts,

I found this Asilidae speciman (?) not far from the river Rhine. Can the genus be determined from the photo?

Observation details: Germany, Worringen close to Cologne/NRW, alluvial forest, 28.05.2012

Thanks in advance, and best regards
Joerg

Hello JoergSiemers,

The Asilidae is a female Dioctria rufipes.

If you'd want to identify Asilidae yourself there are two very nice links to know of:
The Dutch guide with lots of photo's of living specimens;
http://waarneming.nl/download/fotogidsAsilidae.pdf
And the German keys by Geller-Grimm;
http://www.robberflies.info/keyger/start.html

Greetings,

Ectemnius

Thank you very much, Ectemnius, for both the determination and the links!

Indeed the links seem very helpful!

Best regards
Joerg

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
