NEW KEYS TO LARVAE OF HOLARCTIC CHIRONOMIDAE

Andersen, T., Cranston, P.S. & Epler, J.H. (Eds) 2013.
The larvae of Chironomidae (Diptera) of the Holarctic region - Keys and diagnoses.
Insect Systematics and Evolution Supplement 66: 1-571.

This is a completely revised guide to the identification, ecology and distribution of the larval Chironomidae of the Holarctic Region. It replaces the classic book edited by T. Wiederholm (Entomol. scand. Suppl. 19; 1983).
The new, multi-authored work aims to guide users, including those who are not experts in the group, to accurate identifications and to substantial further references. Keys are for the genus level, but some keys lead to subgenera or species groups. Previous diagnoses and figures for all taxa have been revised, and keys improved. Recently described or associated larvae in established genera are incorporated. Relevant taxa and records from outside the region are included to give the guide wider value.

A consistent terminology is applied across all subfamilies, with modifications proposed especially for the dorsal head sclerites and mandibular structures. For the Tanypodinae the sites of cephalic setae and pores are incorporated and illustrated across the subfamily consistently for the first time.

Authors are Trond Andersen, Paddy Ashe, Pete Cranston, Torbjørn Ekrem, John
Epler and the late Ole Sæther.

Jäger-Zürn, I., Spies, M., Philbrick, C. T., Bove, C. P. & Mora-Olivo, A. 2013.
Plant galls (cecidia) in the neotropical water plant family Podostemaceae induced by larvae of Chironomidae (Diptera).
SPIXIANA 36(1): 97-112.

Abstract Novel kinds of plant galls (cecidia) induced in aquatic angiospermous macrophytes by larvae of non-biting midges are reported on for the first time, based on observations involving four species of the neotropical flowering water plant family Podostemaceae. The plants inhabit rocks in waterfalls and cascades and provide unique biocenoses in otherwise inanimate, dangerous environments. Assemblages of invertebrates populating the surfaces of the plants are dominated by larvae of Chironomidae. In addition, several species from the same insect family are found exclusively in leaf cavities surrounded by tissues and structures otherwise unseen on the respective host plants. This study reports on the morphological and histological modifications observed on such galls in Podostemaceae, and discusses some aspects of the plants’ interactions with gall inducing chironomids.

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
