Hi,

It appears to be Scoliocentra, using the keys to insects of the European part of USSR it keys to Scoliocentra scutellaris but I'm not sure I followed it correctly.

6th June in my garden, near Lincoln UK.

Hi,
Scoliocentra scutellaris is very similar to Sc. villosa and Sc. fraterna in body colouration. Your female specimen is with all probability Scoliocentra (Chaetomus) confusa Wink. Andrzej

Thanks Andrzej, at least I go the correct genus! Grin

What are the defining differences which would make it confusa? If there is a feature I need to look for, I can enlarge the photo more but I only got two shots.

I looked at the keys again, I can see where I should have jumped to #5 and onwards, there are hairs on the Mesopleuron.

Are we safe to call it Scoliocentra (Chaetomus) confusa?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
