Hi, does anyone have an idea what species of Cheilosia this could be? Animal caught in Limburg (Belgium) C. proxima is rather common here, but the antennae are reddish, which would point to C. rufimana.

Thanks, but I kinda figured that out already Smile
I suspect C. proxima group (eyes with pale hairs, bristles at scutellum, dusted sternites,...). Is further identification possible based on the pictures?

Nope, not possible.
Try to contact Frank Van de Meutter. He's excellent on Syrphids!
And always willing to help Smile

Ok, I've looked at the specimen again and now I believe that it is probably C. rufimana. I also clearly saw the bristles at the underside of femur III as indicated in the book of Van Veen. Link with more pictures: http://waarnemingen.be/waarneming/view/76370343

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
