I photographed this one at the Bergherbos, Montferland, Netherlands in May 2006. I believe it is Ctenophora atrata, but it would be nice if someone could confirm that.

Thanks in advance!

A nicely illustrated key of the West Palearctic Ctenophorinae was published this year in Entomologische Berichten 66(5).

Females with sabre-like ovipositor belong to Tanyptera, of which there are only two species in this region. Then, the females with unicolour reddish femora are Tanyptera (Tanyptera) atrata atrata ; females like this one with tip of femora black are T. (T.) nigricornis nigricornis.

I've been looking around for pictures on the internet, and it seems there are no pictures listed as nigricornis, but many if not most of the pictures designated as 'T. atrata' show females with black tips of the femora.
But this may be the real atrata:

So I was close, but not close enough. Thank you very much for your help, Louis!

Does anyone have the pdf file of the Oosterbroeck et al. Ctenophorinae key?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
