I caught this Eupeodes goeldlini/bucculatus in Turnhout (Belgium) on 3/04/2012.

The basal cells are completely haired with microtrichia, which is a distinguishing feature for E. goeldlini.
This key (http://www.prodin...720590.pdf) sais they can be distinguished by the shape of the black spots on the tergites.

But I have read that the genitalia are the only relaiable way to distinguish this species.
Can I be sure that this is a goeldini or do I have to examine the genitalia?

Good question, but unfortunately no easy answer.
Eupeodes is notoriously difficult, and it is sometimes not possble to put a name on specimens, even with the existing keys.

Thanks for the answer Gerard.
Are there any good keys for the genitalia of Eupeodes?

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
