Hi Phil,

It looks like Conops vesicularis, I had it in 2010. Big, ~14mm!

Hi, Janet.
Yes that's what I thought but Andy Godfrey suggested that at rest Conops sp. should have its wings more spread and that they do not generally rest on leaves. He also said that it was quite unlikely this far north?
Regards
Phil

Phil, it is nearly two years since I keyed this but I don't think it's incorrect! If it is then I don't know what else it could be, ask Andy Godfrey to take a look then tell you they don't have wings folded nor are they this far north. I am less than 5 miles as the crow flies from you. Wink

This is Conops vesicularis. In the UK, often associated with heathland habitats and quite scarce. Most records are from the south and south-east of England. Please can you forward the record details to the recording scheme? (dave.clements1@ntlworld.com) Nice find.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
