My latest point of confusion is how to tell Drosophilidae from Lauxaniidae.

So which is this fly?

I have only the one photo so I have posted it large.

Size, 4.2 mm to rear of wing. Attracted to lights, open area near woodlands, 1 October 2006. West Virginia USA.

It is the same genus as you had HERE, but maybe a more mature specimen. As you can see on the frons, on each side ther are two setae that are bent backwards. If it were Drosophilidae, there would be one additional setae that was bent forwards.

Thanks, Paul, that tip about the two pairs of setae versus three is going to be very helpful to me. I am going to go back now through all my Drosophilid photos and see if I have any Lauxaniids lurking there!
