Would anyone like to suggest a family for this small (3mm) fly which looks pretty distinctive?

It doesn't only look like Typhamyza bifasciata, IT IS.
Very nice small fly, isn't it? Did you collect it in a Typha stand?

Hello Jan,
There is a great deal of Typha in the gravel-pit site at Lincoln in the English east Midlands where it was collected. I have some volunteers who collect for me and this means that I don't always have the exact site of collection. There are some records on the National Biodiversity Gateway website from about thirty miles away but not from Lincolnshire so there is the possibility that it might be new from my county.
Regards
Phil Porter

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
