I read all about this fly on the internet, which is depressingly little. On some sites, it is reported there are not two species G. minor and G. maculata, just one: G. maculata. I couldn't get a clear picture of the exact differences between the two species. One difference is in the legs, but I don't know what. The other difference frequently reported is in the colours of the males. Males of G. minor have only small orange spots, or lack orange spots all together. Males of G. maculata have the abdomen almost entirely orange. If that is true am I right to conclude this specimen is G. minor? Any views on the identification and the species problem welcome. Thanks a lot in advance. Edited by gardensafarinl on 20-11-2011 22:05 |

1. The opinion that minor is a synonym of maculata had been published by me in: Far Eastern Entomologist, 2011, vol. 231 http://www.biosoil.ru/fee/#N231 2. Either one agree with that my opinion or not, the fly on your photo is maculata anyway Nikita Vikhrev - Zool Museum of Moscow University |
