Here is another determination of O. falcata which seemingly is not totally in accordance with the characters given by Merz (1994).. (see my comment above in another thread). |

I have some doubts on Severin's ID, first of all because of accumulation of new data on the falcata-like species from Spain (John Smit's MS paper on barcoding), it looks like my Orellia tragopogonis Korneyev, 2003, might have more variable wing pattern, from entirely separated crossbands 3 and 4 to partly or entirely fused like here. I think that accumulation of more fresh, frozen or 96% alco stored material from Spain is badly needed to see if there is just falcata (a stem-boring species) and such a variable tragopogonis (flower-head species) or also the third unknown cryptic species poorly different from both but from mtDNA also present.
