Sunbathing on a rock in forest, New Hampshire, USA June 19, 2011. Body length 7 mm. Arista has long hairs, hard to see except in the full size pictures. I think what appears to be a pair of presutural acrostichals is in fact shadows of hairs on the head and this fly has none. It is similar to a few American species of Mydaea but differs from them all. Prealar short rules out urbana, and it's a different color from those in the gallery. Frons 1/3 head width rules out neglecta (which may be a pale form of electa, which also looks different in the gallery). Fore tarsi not distinctly widened rules out discimana. |
