Sunbathing on a rock in forest, New Hampshire, USA June 19, 2011. Body length 7 mm.

Arista has long hairs, hard to see except in the full size pictures. I think what appears to be a pair of presutural acrostichals is in fact shadows of hairs on the head and this fly has none.

It is similar to a few American species of Mydaea but differs from them all. Prealar short rules out urbana, and it's a different color from those in the gallery. Frons 1/3 head width rules out neglecta (which may be a pale form of electa, which also looks different in the gallery). Fore tarsi not distinctly widened rules out discimana.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
