Hello,

I saw this 4-5 mm fly in September at the end of a day. He was "grazing" on a leaf near a brook in Southern Limburg.

Edit : Title changed from Hybotidae into Platypezidae

This is a platypezid fly. I am not really up-to-date with these anymore, but maybe Protoclythia rufa?

Thanks Paul,

So the result of searching one hour for the identity of this animal is that I even haven't got the family right. Maybe I should make a change and start photographing cows. They are a lot easier.

Ah But once you know you stay knowing. No bull... Look at the very swollen hind metatarsal, the curl of the abdomen (like Conopidae) and the curious smoky iridescent colours (silver/red/brown) of the abdomen. Description and figures at

Thanks for the link Robert,

Apart from the appearance I should have recognised the fly by his behaviour, as it was walking around on the leaf very fast.
