In the first part of the monograph, the history of taxonomic investigations on the Palaearctic Anthomyzidae, the morphology of preimaginal stages (egg, larva, puparium) and adults, and the systematic position and higher classification of Anthomyzidae are reviewed. The systematic treatments of all taxa (including fossil ones) of Anthomyzidae recognized in the Palaearctic Region are presented, with most complete data dealing with nomenclature, type material, taxonomy (diagnoses and redescriptions, keys, illustrations of taxonomically important structures and diagnostic features), pre-imaginal stages, relationships, biology and distribution. Two subfamilies, Protanthomyzinae (with one fossil genus and one species) and Anthomyzinae (with 11 extant genera and 42 species), were recognized in the region: ?Protanthomyza Hennig, 1965 (1 species), Amygdalops Lamb, 1914 (3 species), Anagnota Becker, 1902 (4 species), Anthomyza Fall?n, 1810 (19 species), Cercagnota Roh?ček & Freidberg, 1993 (1 species), Epischnomyia gen.n. (1 species), Santhomyza Roh?ček, 1984 (3 species), Stiphrosoma Czerny, 1928 (6 species), Typhamyza Roh?ček, 1992 (1 species). Two new genera are established, viz. Epischnomyia gen.n. (type species: Ischnomyia triarmigera Sueyoshi & Roh?ček, 2003) and Receptrixa gen.n. (type species: Anthomyza receptrix Roh?ček & Freidberg, 1993) and 5 new species are desribed, viz. Anagnota oriens sp.n. (Russia: W. Siberia), Anthomyza clara sp.n. (Switzerland, Estonia, Lithuania), A. orineglecta sp.n. (Kuril Is.: Iturup I.), A. umbrosa sp.n. (Madeira) and Stiphrosoma grandis sp.n. (Kuril Is.: Iturup I.). Anthomyza dorsata Collin, 1944 is synonymized (syn.n.) with A. dissors Collin, 1944 and two species are put in new combinations, Epischnomyia triarmigera (Sueyoshi & Roh?ček, 2003) comb.n. and Receptrixa receptrix (Roh?ček & Freidberg, 1993) comb.n.
