The males front legs strike me as comical for some reason.

Judging mostly by antennae, I am thinking Sarcophagidae? In a moment I will post a detail of the antennae.

Open area near woodlands, 27 August 2006, West Virginia USA.

ID help appreciated!

Yes, Sarcophaga or a closely related genus. Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with the Nearctic species to help further.
